Classic Apple Crumble

Ingredients

• 1.5 kg cooking apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped

• 30 g butter (for filling)

• 175 g light brown sugar

• Crumble Topping

• 175 g plain flour

• 100 g rolled oats

• 115 g butter, cut into cubes

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan and prepare a 25 cm round shallow ovenproof pie dish.

2. Place the apples in a wide-based pan with 2 tablespoons of water and butter. Cook over gentle heat for about 6 minutes, stirring regularly, until the apples are tender. Remove from heat, stir in the brown sugar, and set aside to cool.

3. Make the crumble topping by combining flour, oats, and butter in a large bowl. Rub the mixture together with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs, then stir in the demerara sugar.

4. Spoon the cooled apple mixture into the pie dish and level the surface. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples and finish with a light sprinkle of light brown sugar.

5. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, then lower the temperature to 180°C/160°C Fan and bake for an additional 20 minutes, until golden and bubbling.

6. Serve hot with cream, custard, ice cream, or crème fraîche.
